Ombré Nail Tutorial

Ombré is a very cute and stylish trend. I recently found an amazing (and easy) way to paint this on your nails! Follow these simple and easy steps to achieve this amazing nail look!

Start off with clean nails. You don't want to have left over nail polish on your gorgeous new nails!

For the base, paint your nails white. The colors will show up much better, and it doesn't have to be neat at all, it just has to cover your whole nail.

Choose your colors. Paint them onto a makeup sponge (they are very cheap). I find that painting the darker color first makes the lighter colors turn out more vibrant. Also, be sure to overlap the lighter color(s) with the darker ones. You may have to repeat this step 4-7 times.

Apply top coat. Do not wait for your nails to completely dry! The top coat acts as a blender and makes the colors more "ombré-ish."

Here is the finished look! Clean up any nail polish on your skin with a q-tip and nail polish remover. If you wanted, you could paint palm trees with black nail polish as a silhouette or anything that you like.

I hope this nail polish tutorial helped you! These nails are also great for the summer time, and the colors I chose remind me of the sunset. Make sure to stay tuned for my next blog!

How to Grow Longer, Healthier Hair in Weeks

Many girls have experienced getting a haircut... and now it's too short! Or, maybe you just want to grow longer, healthier hair. Of course, a year ago, I cut my hair to shoulder length and donated it. Now I want to grow my hair back and make it stronger, because lately, my hair has been weak, until I started to use these methods. There are a couple ways to do so, so now you just have to do them!

Change the way you wash your hair:

Over-washing your hair may seem like you're keeping it extra clean, but it strips your hair of its natural oils. So shower everyday, but don't wash your hair each time! Hot and steamy showers feel so good, but not to your hair! It leaves your hair dry, itchy, and brittle, which leads to easy breakage. So what is the solution? Wash your hair no more than 3 times a week and use the coldest temperature water you can handle.

Carefully dry your hair:

Do you towel dry your hair roughly, brush it out, and blow it dry? You're breaking your hair! Treat your hair nicely, so after you shower, gently towel dry it and let it air dry. Also, don't brush your hair while it is wet. If you need to, use your fingers and a wide tooth comb. Don't blow dry your hair unless it is for a special occasion.

Don't use harsh chemicals:

Some shampoos contain sulfates, which strip your hair of its natural oils while other conditioners contain silicone which coat the hair with chemicals and need to be washed out with more strong shampoo.

Go heat-less:

Try doing heat-less hairstyles instead of using curling irons and straighteners. Switch out chemical-filled hairsprays and gels for natural versions by making your own natural ones.

Choose the right foods:

Eat more protein foods like beef, chicken, fish, pork, and other types of meat. Eggs and some types of cheese are also high in protein. Beans and other legumes, nuts, and leafy vegetables like spinach have protein, too. Eat omega-3 fatty acids. It's found in a number of delicious foods like avocados, nuts, salmon, flax seed oil, and more. And lastly, drink more water! If you're dehydrated, it'll show in your hair. Your hair will become dry, dull, and more prone to breakage.

Massage your scalp:

Massaging your scalp will help stimulate blood flow to the area.  Increased blood flow will mean an increase in the amount of nutrients being transported there, which will improve hair growth.

Olive oil hair mask:

The fatty acids that olive oil is made up of will coat the shaft of your hair, helping to keep it healthy and protected. Olive oil will coat the damaged outer layers of your hair, giving them a sleeker, smoother, and healthier appearance. To make do the hair mask, use the following instructions. Select a high-quality extra virgin olive oil as the base for your mask and pour about 5 tablespoons into a bowl. Put it into the microwave for about 15 seconds. If it is too hot, let it cool down. Massage it into your damp hair and let it sit for an hour and a half. After the time is up, rinse your hair completely with shampoo. This will also help with dandruff, frizzy hair, dullness, and brittle hair.

Other home remedies:

A mixture of aloe vera and honey: Mix the flesh of three leaves of aloe vera with honey and apply it over the scalp. Wait 20 minutes and wash hair out as usual.
An energy-packed breakfast: Mix together a spoonful of soya lecithin, a spoonful of wheatgerm, a spoonful of honey, a spoonful of brewer’s yeast, and a yogurt. Try this homemade recipe every day for breakfast.
Tomatoes, olive oil and aloe vera: Blend a tomato with a tablespoon of olive oil. Heat until warm and apply the mixture to the scalp, letting stand as long as possible. This mixture can be enhanced by adding aloe vera.
Rosemary water: Wash your hair every day with rosemary water. You can buy rosemary shampoo or make your own rosemary water.

Take care of your hair! ---Emily: The Girly Girl Department <3

Also, Starbucks has a secret size called short. They don't put it on their menu because it is so small, and they want the larger sizes to be bought. But getting this size is better for you because there is less to consume. Hope you enjoyed this!

 Swap:
  • Frozen yogurt for ice cream:  Frozen yogurt uses milk instead of cream, which is much better for you. Plus,it tastes much fresher! I personally like frozen yogurt much better (cake batter is my fave).
  • Wheat bread for white bread: Whole wheat is much higher in fiber, vitamins B6 and E, magnesium, zinc, folic acid and chromium. It is also  sweeter.
  • Dark chocolate for other chocolates: If you just can't give up your candy, dark chocolate is the better way to go. It is very potent with antioxidents, and it helps to drop your high blood pressure!
  • Grilled chicken for fried chicken: Yes, chicken is good for you, but when you put grease all over it, it becomes unhealthy for you. Many people also say grilled chicken tastes better!
  • Fresh fruit for processed fruits: Raw fruits are already in its best form, but processed fruits, like orange cups or applesauce, are combined with unhealthy sugars.
  • Whole wheats for refined grains: Whole grains are the healthiest types of grains. Refined grains, like many crackers and cereals, have stripped the fiber from the grains.
  • English muffin for bagels: Half of a bagel packs about 40 more calories than an entire English muffin. Also, choosing the spreads affects the calories. Choose fresh fruits instead of sugary sweet jams and cream cheeses.
  • Trail mix for mixed nuts: Two handfuls of nuts are heart-healthy but calorie-heavy. Downsize the 2 handfuls of nuts to 1 (about 3⁄4 oz.), and add a handful of air-popped popcorn (be sure to not add salt!) and whole-grain cereal, such as Chex.
  • Fresh or dried herbs/spices for salt: Herbs do not contain any calories, but salt has a lot of sodium!!
  • Hummus for ranch (or neither): salad is a great healthy choice, just not when you pour so much calories of ranch on it! You can substitute that with hummus, or just not even any sauces.
  • Crinkle cut carrots for potato chips: potato chips are filled with oils and grease. They can lead to pimples or even acne! So going for a crinkle cut carrot is much better for you. It's still crunchy and it's sweet!
  • Plain non-fat Greek yogurt for sour cream: Switch out these for the same, but healthier taste!
  • Chicken sausage for pepperonies:
Also, drinking water instead of sodas will help your body in many aspects. You should drink 8 (8 oz.) of water every day. Water can help you obtain clear, youthful skin. Drinking enough water promotes weight loss. It removes by-products of fat, reduces eating intake (by filling up your stomach if consumed prior to meals), reduces hunger (hello natural appetite suppressant!), raises your metabolism and has zero calories!

Workout

Going to the gym is great for toning up those muscles. Because you are working with weights, you will want to get permission from your parents first. There are so many different ways to exercise, and you probably don't even realize that you are!

You can:

Do aerobics! Aerobic exercise is sometimes known as cardio, which pumps up the heart to make it stronger. This is something that everyone can do, because you don't need to go to the gym! You can stay at home and run around in the neighborhood, which many people do, or even go swimming! Also, dancing tones your entire body! Another way to do aerobic exercises it through cycling! It's not only shaping and thinning your thighs, but it's fun to ride around! There are also many stationary exercises to do! One that many people know is pushups! These help with your biceps and abs. There are also sit-ups, squats (great way for a thigh gap), jumping jacks, Russian twist, lunges, planking, and so much more!

Lift weights! If you want to have bigger, stronger muscles, you might want to get into lifting weights. Start out with a small amount of weight and work your way up. A good number to start off with is 10 and then moving up by fives so from 10 to 15 to 20 etc.

Start a daily workout plan! If you don't have enough time to do a full hour of working out, you have a couple minutes here and there to workout like:
-When you are brushing your teeth, you can do a wall sits
- When you are using the bathroom, do 5 squats before walking out
- While you are on your phone checking Instagram or Vine (girl I know you do ;) you can plank
- Just have fun and dance when you are on a study break, cooking, etc.
- When you are waiting for something to come out of the microwave or oven, do butt kicks!
- Right when you wake up, you could do 10 push ups, 10 jumping jacks, and 10 crunches.
- While you brush your hair, you can do calf raises
- SMILE!! :D Smiling is not only fun to do, but it helps you lose calories! Laughing for 15 minutes will alone help you lose about 40 calories!

I hope that you soon get that dream body of yours. Don't forget to accept your body, because you are be(you)tiful!

DIY: Bow Pocket Jean Shorts!

Although these jeans look like they cost a fortune, you can easily make them at your house for cheap!

The only things you'll need are:
1. Old jeans (you can buy a pair for $2 at Goodwill!)
2. Scissors
3. Sewing needle (I used a hot glue gun because I can't sew...)
4. A pen or pencil
5. And tweezers (optional) to distress the shorts

This is very easy to do, but it does require time, so be patient! The first thing you need to do is try on the pair of jeans and draw a line with your pen how short you would like it to be. Then cut it and fold if over so that the other leg is the same length. After you cut both legs off, use your tweezers and pull at the bottom (where you just cut) and pull the strings loose. Now turn it over to the back and this is the part where it will take a while. Measure about 3 fingers from the top of the pocket and make a small incision. Make sure you don't cut all the way through! Then, cut it all the way across and do the same to the other side. Cut the hem off of the piece you just cut. After that, cut a small strip from the jeans and wrap that around the pocket to make the form of a bow. Hot glue it or sew it and let it dry.

Ta-da! You have just made your very own personalized jean shorts! Take a bow (get it? BOW pocket jean shorts!) Anyways, these are very great for the summer and keeps you cool while being fashionable! You can also put lace on them, or just cut them by themselves. Be creative!
